Stone Cold Cuts
2016
Where:
Blue Oyster Art Project Space, Ōtepoti Dunedin, NZ.
Description:
This solo exhibition featured a series of cutting devices that were also demonstrated by myself during an artist talk. Some devices were designed for cutting hair, such as the hot-wire chair and the rocking horse cutter tables, and others were designed for chopping cucumbers into slices. These works were made in the framework of a fictional author called John Stone, a down-and-out hairdresser who has to re-invent his profession and all of his cutting equipment MacGyver styles. The exhibition text read: "Judging by the mess, whoever has broken in seems to have spent quite a while in here searching for something. The culprits were long gone and so were his most important tools; the scissors, electric clippers, razor blades, everything sharp basically. I felt sorry for the guy, what was he going to do now? I made a half-hearted attempt to console him. “You’ll be alright, just improvise with what’s left”."
